Travel Awards and Bursaries

DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES AND FACULTY OF SCIENCE TRAVEL GRANT

Value: $250.00 from each Department and Faculty ($500.00 total)    
Deadline: At least two months prior to conference

The Department of Biological Sciences continues to provide $250 toward graduate student travel to attend and present at a conference, once per year. Students need to write an email to Dr. Steven Harris (Head of the Department) to request this funding. It should include their  plan to attend, which conference, when it is; include a rough calculation of the budget needs for travel; and attach a copy of their abstract. 

Matching funds from the Faculty of Science (write Tanya Zacharias), and from the Faculty of Graduate Studies may be applied for upon receiving an approval letter from the Department of Biological Sciences. Letters to Tanya Zacharias (Faculty of Science) should include similar information to that requested above and have a copy of the approval letter attached. Requests for funding must be sent at least 2 months prior to the conference. 

Graduate Student Travel Award

Value: Up to $750.00
Deadline: At least 3 weeks prior to departure

The Faculty of Graduate Studies offers funds to assist graduate students with the costs of travelling to conferences to present papers, posters or other creative works related to their studies. Students must be in good standing and enrolled full time in their programs, with a GPA of 3.50 and over for the last 60 credit hours or equivalent. This award is only distributed once at a Masters level and up to twice at a Ph.D. level. Students must have received support of at least $100.00 from their supervisor, faculty, unit, or department.

University of Manitoba Graduate Students’ Association Conference Grant

Value: Ranges from $75-$700 depending on location of conference, and whether student is presenting
Due date: To be submitted after conference has been attended

Funding is provided by the University of Manitoba Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) to students attending or presenting at conferences who do not have adequate funding. Applications are accepted throughout the year.
